Building a connected, vibrant community.
The Harry Jerome Neighbourhood Lands, located on the east side of Lonsdale Avenue between East 21st and East 23rd Streets, are part of a long-term vision to create a connected, vibrant and inclusive neighbourhood.
Redevelopment of the lands will take place in phases, with opportunities for new housing, public spaces and improved community connections.
Preparing the Site for Future Redevelopment
With the opening of the new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre and Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre, the former facilities have closed and are no longer in use.
The City is preparing to demolish three buildings that have reached the end of their useful life:
- Former Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre
- Former Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre
- Memorial Community Recreation Centre
Demolition is an important step in preparing the lands for future redevelopment, as the proceeds of disposition from the Harry Jerome Neighbourhood Lands will be used to advance Council's approved funding strategy for the new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre.
What to Expect
Preparations for demolition are underway. The three buildings have been fenced off to prevent unauthorized access and maintain public safety during construction.
Work will take place in stages, including:
- Site preparation: Securing the buildings and preparing the site, including use of some buildings for Fire Department training.
- Hazardous materials removal: Identifying and safely removing hazardous materials before demolition.
- Building demolition: Removing the existing structures to prepare the site for future use.
- Park access: Access to the green space along Lonsdale Avenue will remain open for public use.
Residents and visitors may notice construction-related activity in the area as work progresses.
Information about demolition timelines and potential impacts will be shared as details become available.
