When will new pay parking zones and costs come into effect?
Pay parking will be installed in Lower and Central Lonsdale beginning in September. Regulations will be in effect once signage is installed on a block.
Will there be support to help community members learn how to use pay parking technology?
Yes. City staff (Parking Ambassadors) will be available to answer questions and support with changes as installation takes place in Lower and Central Lonsdale. Community members will also have access to several learning resources, including:
- Handouts at City Hall to learn about how to use pay stations and the Passport Parking app to pay for parking
- Online guides
- Training sessions offered by City staff, either at City Hall or in partnership with the North Vancouver City Library, available on request
These supports are designed to make the transition to pay parking as smooth as possible.
What types of payment are accepted?
You can pay for parking in two ways:
- Use the Passport Parking app
- Use a credit or debit card at a nearby pay station
Do I need to register if I’m only parking for 30 minutes or less?
Yes. You must register your vehicle for a parking session in pay parking areas, regardless of duration, or you risk receiving a ticket.
I don’t want to download an app. Is there another way to pay?
Yes. You can pay with a credit or debit card at a nearby pay station.
Will the City increase enforcement in pay parking zones?
Yes. The City is hiring more parking-focused Bylaw Enforcement Officers. Increased enforcement helps improve turnover and availability of parking spaces, and ensures compliance with updated parking regulations and the Street and Traffic Bylaw.
I’m still having trouble finding a parking spot. What else can I do?
There are over 2,000 off-street pay parking spaces available in public lots in Lower and Central Lonsdale. These are a great alternative when street parking is full.
I don’t want to pay for parking. What are my options?
For people who drive but do not want to pay for parking, blocks that have lower occupancy further from Lonsdale Avenue will continue to have free parking, for up to 72 hours. We also encourage people to walk, bike, and take transit as affordable ways to travel to, from, and within the City.
Do rates differ across the City?
To keep things simple, a single rate will be introduced across all paid parking areas in the City. After one year, the City will review parking activity and may adjust the rate—either up, down, or make no change —based on how full parking is on each block. If parking remains full, those areas will see parking fees increase to find a balance so there are always a few parking spots available.
How will these changes affect the pay parking area near Lions Gate Hospital?
Curb space near Lions Gate Hospital is among the busiest in the city. Pay parking will continue in this area, with rates now matching those in Lower and Central Lonsdale. Residents who live near the hospital can purchase a parking permit to help find parking near their home in permit areas.
Why is pay parking also being introduced in Harbourside?
Pay parking was included as part of the Harbourside Waterfront Development application for this area in 2012.
