Sutherland Secondary

In the 2018/2019 school year, the Safe and Active School Travel Program was launched at Sutherland Secondary. This program is an 18 month program funded by the City and facilitated by Urban Systems. The program began with a survey of parents and students to better understand the current modes of transportation and the top safety issues around the school and surrounding neighbourhood. A stakeholder group consisting of parents, school and City staff, and other community partners then completed a ‘walkabout’ to physically assess the area around the school and develop a list of issues and opportunities relating to infrastructure improvements, as well as education and engagement initiatives.

Together, these safe and active travel programs and initiatives will decrease congestion near the school drop off zones, reduce pollutants from idling vehicles, and provide students with more physical activity each day.
