Heavy Rain in the Forecast - Tips to be Prepared

November 25, 2021

The City of North Vancouver is reminding residents to be prepared for another storm system that is expected to bring heavy rain.

City crews are preparing for the weather impacts to the community by clearing catch basins and monitoring low-lying areas for potential flooding and will close roads and trails if required.

Be Prepared: Tips for Residents

  • Be prepared for power outages at home, and to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. If the power goes off, it may take hours, if not days, for it to be restored. Ensure you are stocked up with at least a three-day supply of food, water, medications and other necessities. Charge electrical devices and have flashlights on hand. Follow BC Hydro for updates on outages in your area.
  • Clear catch basins adjacent to your property to help prevent flooding on your street.
  • Stay clear of fast-flowing waterways and unstable banks.
  • Avoid hiking through steeper slopes during increased landslide risk.
  • Never drive through flooded streets or around barricades placed on streets for traffic safety.
  • If traffic lights are out at intersections, remember to treat it as a four-way stop. Expect traffic delays if there are power outages.
  • Be aware of trees and branches down on roadways and trails and avoid those spaces during high winds.
  • Fallen power lines: Stay back at least 30 feet (10 metres) from fallen power lines and report them to BC Hydro at 1.888.769.3766.
  • Check balconies and patios and ensure items are secured or brought inside.
  • For potential disruptions to waste collection, check the CityCollect app or visit cnv.org/garbage.
  • Check on neighbours who may need help, such as seniors, people with special needs, or families with young children.
