Secondary Suites

The City legalized secondary suites in all single-family dwellings in 1993 to increase rental options in lower-density neighbourhoods.

  • Secondary suites are self-contained accessory dwelling units that are part of a principal dwelling.
  • Secondary suites must comply with the Zoning Bylaw and are only permitted if the owner resides at the same property.
  • One secondary suite is permitted on a single-family property and may be combined with an accessory coach house.

Secondary suites being installed in new dwelling units is included in the main dwellings building permit application.
