Be Bear Aware: Summertime Reminders

August 04, 2026

In the summertime, organic waste, fruit, bird feeders and garbage can be especially odorous, attracting bears to urban areas. This summer, bears have been spotted across the City, including busy areas like Central Lonsdale.

Keep yourself and bears safe by managing the bear attractants found near your home or business:

  • Place garbage and Green Can items on the curb between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on collection day.
  • Keep bins and garbage indoors on non-collection days. Bears can break into garages or sheds to get to waste. Keep bins indoors whenever possible.
  • Keep garbage, Green Cans, barbeques and drip trays clean. Wash anything that touches food and waste regularly to reduce smells.
  • Limit outdoor food. Pick fruit as it ripens, remove fallen fruit, refrain from using bird feeders during the summer months and feed pets indoors.
