July 1 is Canada Day! This year, expect larger crowds, heavier traffic and increased noise throughout the City, especially around Lower Lonsdale.
On Canada Day, large-scale activations, including the Uber Eats Canada Soccer House North Vancouver and Canada Day with the Rotary Club of Lions Gate, will be taking place at The Shipyards. Visitors should be aware of limited road closures south of Esplanade on Lonsdale Avenue and Carrie Cates Court for safety. From 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 1, Carrie Cates Court will be closed from Lonsdale Avenue to Rogers Avenue. From 10 p.m. on June 30 until 2 a.m. on July 2, the loading and passenger zone within this area will be removed. To support traffic flow and maintain access for residents and businesses, Victory Ship Way is also operating as a one-way westbound street until mid-July.
Make sure to plan your route ahead of time, and consider walking, rolling, or taking transit to avoid delays and congestion.
Visiting The Shipyards on Canada Day
Getting to and from The Shipyards
As July 1 proves to be a busy day filled with exciting events and activities, the City encourages you to walk, roll, or take transit if you're able to. Please keep the following in mind when travelling to The Shipyards on Canada Day:
- Walk or cycle through trails or streets. The Shipyards is easily accessible via the Spirit Trail and Lower Lonsdale's pedestrian-friendly streets. Bike parking is available throughout the area, and visitors can also access The Shipyards using Evolve e-bikes located across the North Shore. A free Bike Valet will also be offered at two separate locations on July 1 for visitors of Uber Eats Canada Soccer House.
- Come by transit. Due to the World Cup tournament, there are increased transit services available on Canada Day, including increased SeaBus sailings from downtown Vancouver to Lonsdale Quay, located just a five-minute walk from The Shipyards. Several regional bus routes also connect directly to Lonsdale Quay and Lower Lonsdale, with the Lonsdale Quay Bus Loop less than a five-minute walk away.
- Drive and park if necessary. Visitors who must drive can access paid parkades and street parking throughout Lower Lonsdale. Most on-street parking in Lower Lonsdale is pay parking, with free, time-limited parking spaces available outside the commercial core. Visit cnv.org/PayParking for more information on paid parking rates and to view the map. Designated passenger pick-up and drop-off zones will also be available.
To help you plan your route to The Shipyards on Canada Day, take a look at the Transportation Map and review the "How to Get Here" tab at cnv.org/WorldCup.
Expect Traffic & Noise
With traffic pattern adjustments and thousands of guests expected to visit Lower Lonsdale on Canada Day, residents and visitors should expect increased traffic and noise levels:
- Traffic changes and road closures. A reminder that limited road closures south of Esplanade on Lonsdale Avenue and Carrie Cates Court may be required for public safety, and Victory Ship Way is operating as a one-way westbound street. From 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 1, Carrie Cates Court will be closed from Lonsdale Avenue to Rogers Avenue. From 10 p.m. on June 30 until 2 a.m. on July 2, the loading and passenger zone within this area will be removed. No stopping will be allowed in this area.
- Driving reminders. If you're driving in Lower Lonsdale on July 1, remember to yield to pedestrians, cyclists, and others at crosswalks, traffic circles, and driveways. Slow down and give yourself more time to get where you're going.
- Increased noise. While The Shipyards is an animated and lively public gathering space, be prepared for increased noise levels in Lower Lonsdale until 10 p.m. in accordance with the City's noise bylaws. For bylaw concerns on Canada Day, contact Bylaw Services at 604-982-8302 or email bylaw@cnv.org.
Fireworks Reminder
Residents and visitors are reminded that the sale, purchase, possession, or discharge of fireworks is not permitted in the City unless part of an approved public display with a certified Fireworks Supervisor and a permit issued by the Fire Chief. More information on the Fireworks Bylaw can be found at cnv.org/FireSafety.
