Celebrate Indigenous History and Pride Season

June is National Indigenous History Month, the start of Pride Season, and June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples' Day. We encourage you to learn more and take part in the following events throughout the month:

National Indigenous History Month

National Indigenous History Month in Canada is a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Review the resources and events below so you can get involved and gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous peoples stories, traditions and culture.

Museum of North Vancouver
MONOVA’s team of Indigenous Cultural Programmers have created a number of special events and screenings to coincide with Indigenous History Month, and the whole community is invited to attend.

North Vancouver City Library
The NV City Library has many resources available, including books by Indigenous authors, and the Indigenous Peoples’ Community Hub, where you can find information on workshops, reconciliation resources and more.

North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission
Join NVRC in celebrating the stories and achievements of Indigenous Peoples at any of the free workshops or events they have organized.

Pride Season

Pride Season refers to the wide range of Pride events that take place over the summer (June to September) when 2SLGBTQI+ communities and allies come together to spotlight the resilience, celebrate the talent, and recognize the contributions of 2SLGBTQI+ communities. Museum of North Vancouver
Queer History, Queer Stories: Celebrating Pride in North Vancouver - MONOVA dedicates a full day of queer-friendly events leading up to Vancouver Pride weekend. Enjoy Campfire Capers: Drag Storytime, a panel discussion on Queer History, and an evening drag show exploring the untold stories of queer history on the North Shore, taking place on July 29, 2023.

North Van Arts
North Van Arts presents Queer Bash from May 19 – July 1, an exhibition of 2SLGBTQ+ community members works’ exploring the juxtapositions of violence and visibility, prejudice in pride festivals, and the word bash: defined as both a celebration and a condemnation depending on its use.

North Vancouver City Library
Check out the NV City Library’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community hub to find resources, events and books written by 2SLGBTQIA+ authors.
