Larissa Blokhuis comes to Atrium Gallery

October 23, 2014
North Vancouver Community Arts Council presents Larissa Blokhuis November 4, 2014 - January 19, 2015. A colourful blown glass art installation inspired by beautiful creatures of the deep sea.
Artist Talk: Tuesday, November 18, 12:15 - 12:45pm. Please join Larissa as she discusses the inspiration and process behind her work.

This installation was inspired by sea creatures that live beyond the reach of the sun's rays. The translucent quality of these animals, combined with their strange evolutionary path, has created a dream-like effect that Larissa replicates in her pieces.

Deep sea creatures live in an alien world of total darkness, and can encounter few or no firm surfaces in their lives. The discovery of Vent ecosystems in 1977 shocked the scientific community as it proved an ecosystem can survive without the sun (photosynthesis) through chemicals erupting from a geyser, which is called ‘chemosynthesis’. A new deep sea species is identified about every 10 days in these ecosystems.

In her series Larissa creates new imagined species in addition to familiar ones such as jellyfish to give the viewer an ocean reference point. These new discoveries provide a wealth of education, however, like most wildlife, even deep sea creatures are in danger due to changing climate.

With her creations she hopes to emphasize the beauty of the deep sea and highlight the fact that this area of the ocean is worth saving in order to preserve and discover more curious creatures.

Larissa completed her BFA with a major in glass at the Alberta College of Art and Design. In 2009, Larissa moved to the coast temporarily to take a job as a glassblower on Granville Island. She has been Assistant Teacher at Red Deer College and Terminal City Glass Co-op, and has exhibited extensively in Alberta and British Columbia.

Individual sea creatures will be for sale just in time for Christmas!
