City Supports Residents in Need with Grant to North Shore Rent Bank

September 23, 2020

The impacts of COVID-19 present new challenges for our community everyday, especially our most vulnerable residents. To ensure those most at risk are supported, the City has approved a grant of $75,000 to the North Shore Rent Bank, a homelessness prevention initiative offered by Harvest Project. The grant helps protect those experiencing financial hardship as a result of COVID-19 and builds community resiliency – a key part of the City’s COVID-19 mitigation strategy.

“We all want to feel safe in our homes,” said Mayor Linda Buchanan. “This pandemic has put many in our community out of work. To those who are worried about choosing between putting food on the table or paying rent, I want you to know that help is on the way. By investing in the North Shore Rent Bank we are supporting people and helping them stay in their homes.”

The North Shore Rent Bank offers short term, no interest loans to people that are at risk of eviction or disconnection of essential utilities due to a temporary shortage of funds. It also provides a security deposit if current housing is deemed unsafe or it’s become necessary to move to different housing for other reasons.

“Many of our neighbours need a hand-up to be able to stay housed through these difficult times. The North Shore Rent Bank provides tangible help now by providing loans and grants. Thanks to the City of North Vancouver, we’re able to assist more people who need this life-changing resource. We share the goal of making the City and indeed the entire North Shore, the healthiest place to live, for all of us.” - Gary Ansell, Executive Director Harvest Project.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the City has been actively working with community-based organizations, and other North Shore municipalities in a coordinated and collaborative way to build a resilient community and support those most at risk.
