Walking is the first and most fundamental form of transportation. Everyone is a pedestrian at some point in their day. It's how transit passengers reach their destination, how people driving get from the curb to the front door, and those riding a bike get from the bike rack to their end point. The City is committed to making walking an attractive and convenient mobility choice for residents of all ages and abilities. To do this, the City is developing a pedestrian plan - Walk CNV, that when implemented will ensure existing and future walking facilities are safe, enjoyable and accessible for residents and visitors.

What are the benefits of walking?

Walking is a great way to get around and is one of the best ways to get and stay physically active. It's accessible and inexpensive, with no special training required and no gas tank to fill. All you need is a good pair of shoes. Walking also helps to create more livable communities, reduce vehicle-related air pollution and reduce traffic congestion. 

While you can improve your health and ease the burden on your pocketbook, the benefits of walking also extend to the broader community. For example, walking helps to:

Developing Walk CNV

The Walk CNV process involves four distinct phases. There will be multiple opportunities for public input with both in-person events and online participation.

Walk CNV will build on our existing Pedestrian Plan, contained in the City’s Long-term Transportation Plan (2008). It will provide detailed actions to prioritize pedestrian investments throughout the city including new sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks, and many other improvements that make it easier to walk in our neighborhoods.

  • Walking accounts for approximately 11% of all daily trips made by CNV residents.

  • The majority of walking trips remain on the North Shore.
    • 40% stay in the City of North Vancouver
    • 26% travel to the District of North Vancouver
  • The most common reasons why people walk are:

  • People walking in the City don’t travel far - In fact, 88% of all walking trips are less than 2 km or 25 minutes.

  • The City has approximately 135 km of roads, of which over 112 km have sidewalks on one or both sides of the street. PLUS - There are over 30 km of designated trails in the City.
  • More walking results in a healthier community
