October 31 is right around the corner, and while you may be busy organizing the perfect trick-or-treating route, the City is saving you from added planning by sharing some tricks for staying safe and events that are sure to be quite the treat.
Tricks for Staying Safe on Halloween
Fire Safety and No Fireworks
When giving your pumpkins that signature candlelit glow, it’s important to remember that candles are serious fire hazards. Please remember to:
- Blow out all candles before you leave the house or go to bed and avoid leaving candles unattended.
- Place lit Jack-o-lanterns away from flammable items, trick-or-treaters, walkways, doorsteps and yards.
- Keep all decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including lightbulbs and heaters.
- Consider using battery-operated candles to light your pumpkins.
Residents are reminded that the sale, purchase, possession, or discharge of fireworks is not permitted in the City, unless an approved public display with a certified Fireworks Supervisor and a permit issued by the Fire Chief. More information on the Fireworks Bylaw can be found at cnv.org/FireSafety.
Driving on Halloween
Drivers are reminded to be extra cautious and alert on Halloween, as pedestrians may move in unpredictable ways. During peak trick-or-treating hours there will be more pedestrians than usual.
Drivers should keep the following in mind:
- Slow down in residential neighbourhoods.
- Watch for people coming out between parked cars or darting across the road.
- Avoid driving altogether during popular trick-or-treating hours (5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.)
Pedestrian Safety While Trick-or-Treating
If you plan to be out trick-or-treating, pedestrians are encouraged to:
- Review how to safely cross a street with a child.
- Keep your head up and put electronic devices down.
- Walk – don't run – across the street.
- Wear costumes that are easily visible.
- Stay in well-lit areas.
