Celebrating World Rivers Day with Community Planting

September 19, 2023

The City of North Vancouver will celebrate World Rivers Day with a community planting and family-friendly event. The event is taking place Sunday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in lower Heywood Park.

World Rivers Day is an annual celebration of the world’s waterways, held on the fourth Sunday of September. It highlights the many values of rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of rivers worldwide.

During the City’s event, volunteers with the City Park Stewards will plant over 335 trees and shrubs. Volunteers will also participate in other ecosystem restoration activities, including removing invasive plants and cleaning litter.

In addition to the planting, this free event will feature:

  • Children’s activities
  • Bird and bat-house decorating
  • A bike repair café
  • Community group information booths, including the North Shore Streamkeepers, North Shore Black Bear Society and the North Shore Culture Compass
  • City Library book bike
  • City Fire Department

The event is free to attend. Registration is required to participate in the planting. To learn more about the event and to register to volunteer in the planting, visit cnv.org/RiversDay

About the Bike Repair Café

The free bike repair café will feature one-on-one hands-on maintenance sessions led by experienced mechanics from the PEDAL Society. Mechanics will provide tune-ups, diagnostics, answer questions and provide repair advice. One-on-one sessions are first come, first served and only one bike per session per person. E-bikes are accepted, however, mechanics will only look at mechanical components.
