The project logo is inspired by one of the most striking features of the new centre, the wood coffered ceiling in the main lobby. The ceiling mirrors the views of the iconic North Shore forest to welcome visitors with a sense of openness and a feeling of the forest continued inside.

Opening Celebration

Saturday, July 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The City of North Vancouver is thrilled to invite you to the opening of the new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre (HJCRC) on Saturday, July 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m at 130 East 23rd Street. Join us to experience the Centre’s indoor and outdoor spaces through tours, demonstrations, and trying out programs and amenities. There will also be food carts, performers, games, crafts and activities to enjoy throughout HJCRC.

Event Schedule

Outdoor Day-of Activities 

10:30 a.m. – Opening celebration begins
10:30 a.m. – Family-friendly musical performance
11:15 a.m. – Squamish Nation Eagle Song Dancers
11:25 a.m. – Səlilwətaɬ (TsleilWaututh) Nation Elder Jen Thomas Welcome 
11:30 a.m. – Main Ceremony with Mayor and speeches begin
11:40 a.m. – Ribbon cutting and public art unveiling
11:45 a.m. – Self-guided tours begin, public is welcomed inside new Centre and indoor activities start
11:50 a.m. –  12:30 p.m. – DJ Sage
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. – The Phonix Band
2:20 p.m.– 3 p.m. – DJ Sage
3 p.m. – Event concludes 

 

Indoor Day-of Activities

The event will also feature a variety of activities, showcasing HJCRC's spaces and future programming. The public is welcome to tour inside the Centre following the speeches at 11:45 a.m.

Information

  • Operational information and tours, and equipment demonstrations in the Fitness Centre.  

Leisure 

  • A low sensory zone for people to relax and enjoy a quiet activity in the Finch Room. 

Preschool to Youth

  • Toddler playground for children ages 0–6 in the Gymnasium.
  • Table tennis competitions, video games, and more in the Youth Centre.

Arts & Culture

  • Free-flowing, take home art activities for all ages in the Art Studio.
  • A dance party using different props to different styles of music in the Sparrow Room.
  • Learn the basics of Bollywood and Line Dancing in the Heron Room.
  • Airbrush tattoos from INK Vancouver, live music, painting, craft and activity stations, bead bracelet-making, pinwheels, group weaving, bubbles, and an interactive art display in the courtyard and atrium.

Sport & Recreation 

  • Learn how to play lacrosse and participate in carnival games and an obstacle course in the Arena and Owl Room.
  • Basketball, badminton and other large games for all ages in the Gymnasium. 
  • Yoga and Pilates introductions in the Raven Room.
  • Spin demonstration and mini classes in the Spin Studio.
  • Flexibility challenges, skipping competition, vertical jump challenges, and long jump challenges in the Fitness Studio.
  • Introduction to TRX suspension training equipment in the Outdoor Fitness Area.  
  • View the new aquatics centre which will be home to leisure swimming, diving, competition swimming, and wellness activities.
