Westview Elementary

In the 2015/2016 school year, the Safe and Active School Travel Program was launched at Westview Elementary. This program is an 18 month program funded by the City and facilitated by HASTe, HUB for Active School Travel. The program began with a survey of parents and students to better understand the current modes of transportation and the top safety issues around the school and surrounding neighbourhood. A stakeholder group consisting of parents, school and City staff, and other community partners then completed a ‘walkabout’ to physically assess the area around the school and develop a list of issues and opportunities relating to infrastructure improvements, as well as education and engagement initiatives.

A youth committee called the Environmental Squad created a Bike to School Week poster campaign to motivate their classmates to get involved.

To provide further support, an official Best Routes to School map and pamphlet was created to help parents and students plan their walking and cycling routes, as well as identify locations a short distance away from school where students can be dropped off and they can walk the rest of the way.

Together, these safe and active travel programs and initiatives will decrease congestion near the school drop off zones, reduce pollutants from idling vehicles, and provide students with more physical activity each day.
