Dementia Friendly North Shore Action Plan

There are more than 3,700 people with dementia on the North Shore, with about half living in their own homes throughout our community. This number is expected to double by 2034.

The City of North Vancouver created a Dementia Friendly North Shore Action Plan in partnership with the District of North Vancouver, the District of West Vancouver, the Alzheimer Society of BC, Vancouver Coastal Health, and a multitude of actively involved key organizations and community agencies. This initiative is closely related to age friendly communities initiatives on the North Shore. The plan was endorsed by City Council on January 15, 2018.

Dementia friendly communities are ones which exhibit a high level of public awareness and understanding so that people with dementia and their caregivers are encouraged to seek help and are supported by their community. They are also communities that adapt their facilities, infrastructure, programs and services to be accessible and inclusive to people with dementia.

The goal of the Dementia Friendly North Shore initiative is to raise awareness and develop a community action plan so that people with dementia can experience a better quality of life and live as independently as possible in our community.

The three north shore municipalities were awarded a grant from the Union of BC Municipalities to assist with priority actions in 2018: a customized dementia education campaign in North Shore communities, and Dementia awareness and training in collaboration with the Alzheimer Society of BC.
