Stay Safe This Spooky Season!
Halloween Fire Safety
Halloween is one of the top five days for candle fires across Canada. Review the following tips to ensure this season is both spooky and safe:
- Use battery-operated candles in Jack-o’-Lanterns.
- Never leave candle decorations unattended and place lit pumpkins well away from flammable items, trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.
- Keep all decorations away from exits, open flames and heat sources (including lightbulbs and heaters).
- Look for costumes and accessories labelled 'fire-resistant.'
No Fireworks in the City
Fireworks are strictly prohibited in the City of North Vancouver. This includes the sale, purchase, possession, or discharge of fireworks, unless it is an approved public display with a certified Fireworks Supervisor and a permit issued by the Fire Chief. More information on the Fireworks Bylaw can be found at cnv.org/FireSafety.
Halloween Road Safety Reminders
More people than usual use the City’s streets and sidewalks on Halloween, especially during peak trick-or-treating hours.
Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to keep the below road safety tips in mind:
- Slow down when driving in residential neighbourhoods and be extra cautious of pedestrians.
- Watch for people coming out between parked cars or darting across the road.
- Avoid driving altogether during popular trick-or-treating hours (5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.)
- When crossing the street, walk–don’t run–and keep your head up and put electronic devices down.
- Wear costumes that are easily visible and reflective, or include reflective tape and stay in well-lit areas when trick-or-treating.
