Squamish Nation Amalgamation Celebration to Take Place at The Shipyards

July 05, 2023

During the month of July, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) is commemorating a milestone - the 100th anniversary of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh villages amalgamating to become one Nation.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, Squamish Nation has organized the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Days Festival, a month-long series of events. Working closely with the Squamish Nation, the City of North Vancouver is grateful to be hosting an event to celebrate, taking place on July 15 at The Shipyards.

Squamish Nation Amalgamation Celebration at The Shipyards

All are welcome to attend the Squamish Nation Amalgamation Celebration at The Shipyards on Saturday, July 15 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

From artisan markets to traditional performances and storytelling, we encourage the community to come together for the important opportunity of learning about the rich culture and significant contributions of the Squamish Nation. Recognizing the importance of preserving and sharing the traditions, languages and values of First Nations people, we were honoured to support ongoing cultural awareness and understanding.

The celebration will have many activities for all to learn about Squamish Nation culture, traditions and history, including:

  • Music and dance performances
  • Pam Baker Fashion Show
  • Traditional Salmon BBQ
  • Squamish Artisan Workshops
  • Squamish Vendor Market

About Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation)

The Squamish Nation, as a government, has existed since 1923. In their language, they are called Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw. Before 1923, the Squamish People were socially, economically, and politically organized into several physical communities called an úxwumixw ("village; people") in the territory of the Squamish People. The territory of the Squamish People includes the Burrard Inlet, English Bay, False Creek, and Howe Sound watersheds.
