Watering Regulations Are in Effect

April 27, 2023
Seasonal regulations that limit lawn watering for North Vancouver homes and businesses to once per week are in effect from May 1 to Oct. 15.

Lawn watering regulations help conserve the region’s drinking water for the hot, dry months ahead when our community’s water use can increase by 50 per cent, largely due to lawn watering. These regulations are an effective way to help us use our drinking water wisely.

On May 1, Stage 1 of lawn watering regulations will be in effect during which residential and non-residential properties are permitted to water lawns one morning per week, with designated days determined by property address and type. If there is a need to move to Stage 2 of the regulations, the public will be notified and no lawn watering will be permitted.

Stage 1 Residential lawn watering allowed:
Even-numbered addresses may water lawns on Saturdays
Odd-numbered addresses may water lawns on Sundays
Automatic watering is allowed between 5-7 am and manual watering between 6-9 am
Trees, shrubs, and flowers can be watered with a sprinkler any day between 5-9 am, or any time by hand or using drip irrigation
Edible plants are exempt from regulations

Stage 1 Non-residential lawn watering allowed:
Even-numbered addresses may water lawns on Mondays
Odd-numbered addresses may water lawns on Tuesdays
Automatic watering is allowed between 4-6 am and manual watering between 6-9 am
Trees, shrubs, and flowers can be watered with a sprinkler any day between 4-9 am, or any time by hand or using drip irrigation
Edible plants are exempt from regulations

Metro Vancouver Water Conservation Plan

Metro Vancouver sets region‑wide watering regulations through its Drinking Water Conservation Plan, a regional policy developed with local governments, including the City of North Vancouver, to manage the use of drinking water during periods of high demand.

In 2022, the City updated its Drinking Water Conservation Bylaw, No. 8627, to align with Metro Vancouver’s Drinking Water Conservation Plan.
