The City of North Vancouver launches next phase of Lonsdale Great Street improvements in Central Lonsdale

July 7, 2026

New improvements are coming to Central Lonsdale as part of the City of North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Great Street Plan.

Following approval by Council April 20, 2026, the City has set out a 20-year vision to strengthen and revitalize Central Lonsdale as a vibrant neighbourhood main street. The Plan is designed to protect what makes the area special, including its strong local businesses, active sidewalks and diverse community, while planning for future growth and change.

“The Lonsdale Great Street Project is about more than revitalizing a beloved street; it is about shaping the heart of our city for the long term. Central Lonsdale has long been a strong, local-serving commercial area. It is home to small businesses, essential services, and thousands of residents. This plan lays out a thoughtful path forward—one that strengthens economic vitality, improves livability, and creates a place where people don’t just pass through, but choose to spend time and build community. These first improvements are part of a comprehensive long-term plan to build on existing strengths to create a more welcoming, safe and vibrant street for many years to come,” said Mayor Linda Buchanan.

The first phase of projects are now underway, with the improvements to public spaces expected to be completed by the end of this year, including the following initiatives:

  • Adding more attractive and accessible street furniture
  • Improving streetscape aesthetics by painting light poles and re-wrapping recycling and garbage bins
  • Enhancing landscaping in planting beds, rain gardens, tree pits, and parklets
  • Expanding the footprint and duration of seasonal lighting along Central Lonsdale, beginning in September
  • Installing street banners, such as those for the Remembrance Day Parade
  • Restoration of utility-impacted sidewalk sections, by replacing temporary asphalt sidewalk patches with permanent concrete

While these early efforts focus largely on visual improvements, the Plan establishes a long-term framework to help local businesses flourish, attract new commercial activity, and support a vibrant neighbourhood main street for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
