A Building Permit is required for most construction, renovation, and demolition projects. This ensures that projects meet safety standards outlined in the BC Building Code and other technical regulations.
You will need a Building Permit if you are:
- Demolishing a building or part of a building.
- Constructing a new building or accessory structure, such as a garage, shed, or deck.
- Renovating or altering an existing building, including:

Adding or removing walls, doors, or windows.
- Moving interior walls or existing plumbing, electrical, or gas lines.
- Structural repairs.
- Performing drywall repairs that impact fire separations
- Creating additional floor area.
- Installing or modifying electrical, plumbing, or HVAC systems.
- Adding a secondary suite to an existing house.
- Changing the use of a commercial space.
- Completing tenant improvements for a new or existing commercial space.
Projects that do not typically require a Building Permit include cosmetic updates, such as painting, tiling, or replacing cabinets without altering structural or mechanical systems.
