Hold the Heat This Winter

January 15, 2026
The City, together with Lonsdale Energy, is helping residents Hold the Heat this season by sharing tips to stay comfortable while conserving energy use during the winter. By saving energy at home, residents can make their homes feel more comfortable while seeing reductions in their energy bills.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

Energy providers across the City, including FortisBC, BC Hydro and Lonsdale Energy, encourage users to practice energy-saving tricks, especially during the winter months, when the need for household heating increases.

Space and water heating account for nearly 80% of household energy use, but small improvements, like sealing drafts or reducing hot water consumption, can make a big difference for home comfort, energy bills and the environment.

Five simple ways that residents can help Hold the Heat, include:

  • Keep your baseboards clean. When dust and dirt collect on baseboard heaters, warm air can’t circulate properly, causing the heaters to work harder and consume more energy. By vacuuming baseboards, you can ensure that they work efficiently.
  • Retain heat in the home. Close curtains at night, seal windows and door drafts, and use thermal curtain clips or weatherstripping to keep heat inside.
  • Use hot water wisely. In the winter, pay special attention to the hot water use throughout your home. Reducing hot water use, like taking shorter showers or air-drying laundry, lowers energy use.
  • Invest in smart tools. Utilizing smart tools including thermal curtain clips, dryer balls, low-flow shower heads and sink aerators, are small investments that help cut energy with minimal effort.
  • Use ceiling fans. In the winter, spin ceiling fans clockwise at a low speed to push warm air down into the room and distribute heat.
