Suites In Duplexes

On April 8, 2013, City Council approved an amendment to the Zoning Bylaw to permit Accessory Dwelling Units (suites) in Two-Unit Residential buildings (duplexes) as an option to increase the availability of affordable rental housing in the City.

Suites will have to be located in a duplex unit in which the owner lives. In order to put a suite into a duplex unit, an additional parking stall is required on the site, and the suite will be limited to a maximum of 40% of the total Gross Floor Area or 969 square feet whichever is the lesser.

The amended zoning bylaw for Two-Unit Residential uses will be posted on the web site once it has been consolidated into the bylaw.

A Building Permit application will be required to permit a suite, and City staff will be making sure that the suite is in compliance with the BC Building Code, particularly with regards to life safety issues.
