Garbage & Recycling

Garbage & Recycling

The City provides curbside garbage, recycling and yard trimmings collection to more than 44,000 residents, moving tonnes of waste materials each year. What is collected is transported to the North Shore Transfer Station.

Metro Vancouver operates an integrated waste management system that includes six transfer stations, an energy-from-waste facility, and two landfill sites. Approximately 48% of the region's waste is recycled, about 9% is incinerated, and the remainder is landfilled.

Other waste management programs are available, including those operated by the North Shore Recycling Program and green-minded community groups.

For information on the local transfer station, including hours of operation, location and rates, visit Wastech Services Limited.

Protecting our natural environment is like investing in our future. If we do not take the time to develop a solid plan and monitor its progress, we could easily lose this vital natural asset. Learn how you can help the City invest in a green, sustainable future.

more

While basic garbage and recycling collection service is necessary to sustain the health, safety, social and economic well being of the community, the City encourages community-driven and supported ideas for reducing waste. Residents who take the initiative to make green choices in what they buy and how they live help the City further its sustainable plans for the community.

The City presently participates in several waste management programs and is exploring other initiatives that will help accelerate its waste reduction goals. For example, the City's Parks & Environment Advisory Committee (PEAC) is considering a move to encourage the use of reusable shopping bags as opposed to disposable, non-biodegradable plastic bags. As new programs take shape, the City will provide details here.
