Spirit Trail City-Wide Route Planning & Design Study |
In September 2007, the City began an overall study of the proposed Spirit Trail route, to determine the alignment and develop a detailed concept design and implementation plan for the 6.5km of Spirit Trail across the City's waterfront. In 2008, City Council endorsed the alignment and conceptual design for the Spirit Trail.
The City noted some key challenges:
- Barriers to movement and gaps in ownership and the costs to bridge these gaps
- Steep topography in certain areas is a significant constraint to making the trail accessible
At the same time, the City identified the following opportunities:
- Connect neighbourhoods and major destinations on the North Shore and along Burrard Inlet
- Create a safe transportation and recreation route
- Establish a connected series of destinations and experiences
