2010 Paralympic Games

The City of North Vancouver welcomed the world's best Paralympic winter athletes for the 2010 Paralympic Games from March 12 to 21, 2010. The games included approximately 40 participating countries and 1,350 Paralympic athletes and officials.


Congratulations to Lauren Woolstencroft!

Lauren WoolstencroftThe City of North Vancouver and Members of Council extend congratulations to City resident, Ms. Lauren Woolstencroft on winning five gold medals at the 2010 Winter Paralympics. Lauren Woolstencroft won gold in every event she competed in, setting the record for most gold medals won by any Winter Paralympian at a single Winter Paralympics.

Lauren Woolstencroft delivered an outstanding performance in alpine skiing and women's super combined standing and was rewarded with an outstanding five gold medals, adding significantly to Canada's record number of gold medals at the 2010 Winter Games.

A resident of North Vancouver, Ms Woolstencroft started ski racing at age 14 and has been a member of the Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team since 1998. She has won over 50 medals, including eight world championship titles.

She represented Canada at the 2002 Winter Paralympics in Salt Lake City, winning two gold medals and a bronze. She represented her country again at the 2006 Games in Turin, winning one gold and one silver medal. This is Lauren Woolstencroft's third Paralympic Games.

The City is proud of Ms. Woolstencroft's outstanding performance. She is a true inspiration to all Canadians, one of our country's greatest Paralympic champions, and the City of North Vancouver is honoured to have her as a member of our community.

At a formal ceremony on June 14, 2010, Mayor Darrell Mussatto and Members of Council conferred the honour of Freedom of the City on Lauren Woolstencroft for her extraordinary accomplishments at the 2010 Winter Paralympics. A resident of North Vancouver, Ms. Woolstencroft won gold in every event she competed in, setting the record for most gold medals won by any Winter Paralympian at a single Winter Paralympics.


2010 Paralympic Torch Relay

The Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Torch Relay included more than 600 Paralympic Torchbearers proudly carrying the flame for an inspirational 10-day journey across Canada. The Olympic Flame visited 11 communities over 10 days, culminating in the lighting of the Paralympic Cauldron at BC Place in downtown Vancouver on March 12, 2010.
