The Pier
The City's newest public amenity is fast becoming a signature landmark.
The Pier is a breathtaking venue located on the City's historic Versatile Shipyards site. Anchored by the 700-foot long Burrard Dry Dock Pier and smaller floating St. Roch Dock, the Pier offers spectacular 360-degree views of the North Shore and Vancouver skylines.
A walkway leads pedestrians from the foot of Lonsdale Avenue to the Pier, providing access to this portion of the City's waterfront for the first time in nearly 100 years.
The Pier represents a coming together of the past and future. It stands as a tribute to the City's shipbuilding history and rich marine heritage. At the same time, the Pier is transforming the City's waterfront into a major urban destination. The Pier facility draws tourists, visitors and locals as well as private and commercial vessels, all of which bring economic opportunities to the neighbouring area.

City of North Vancouver Honoured with Navy Vessel Namesake
On July 12, 2010, Mayor Darrell Mussatto accepted a framed presentation from Canadian Navy Captain Alex Rueben, Chief of Staff, Maritime Forces Pacific.
HMCS Capilano was commissioned at Victoria on August 25, 1944 and sailed to Halifax to arrive on October 20 to join the Battle of the Atlantic. Capilano completed workups in Bermuda in November and was assigned to North Atlantic convoy duty until Victory in Europe. She left Londonderry for the last time to return to Canada on May 30, 1945 and was put into tropical refit for service in the Pacific. The work was completed in October and the ship was paid off to reserve service on November 24, 1945 and was subsequently sold. In 1948 she appeared under Jamaican registry as Irving Francis AM. She foundered in 1953 off the Cuban coast while being towed by the Bess Barry M., the former HMCS St. Boniface.
Since 1910 Canada has put over 850 warships to sea under the naval ensign. Over 300 ships have been named for communities from coast to coast to coast.
The ability for the City to host pocket cruise ships is an exceptional opportunity for economic development and tourism. Docked vessels help to animate the City's waterfront, raise the profile of the City as a tourist destination and generate significant new tourist expenditures in the local community.
