Community Gardens

Community Gardens

Interest in community gardening, urban food production and food security has been growing on the North Shore in recent years. Community gardens provide access to fresh produce and plants as well as create a sense of community and connection to the environment.

Queen Mary Community Garden
The Queen Mary Community Garden site, bounded by West Keith Road, Mahon Avenue and 13th Street, provides a central location with plenty of potential for gardeners! It is highly visible, easily accessible by walking and transit and is in close proximity to Queen Mary Elementary School and dense urban development.

In addition to the individual allotment plots, an integral component of the Queen Mary Community Garden is an Edible Garden Project Demonstration Garden.

Lower Lonsdale Community Garden
Stroll through the 'friendship gates' of the Lower Lonsdale Community Gardens, located next to the North Shore Neighbourhood House, a local community centre. Built in June 2004, this garden is host to almost 50 community garden plots for growing vegetables and flowers. Each plot is maintained by nearby residents from the surrounding dense urban environment of Lower Lonsdale.

The garden provides a respite as well as opportunities for reconnecting with nature, not to mention the fresh vegetables the gardeners get to harvest for all their hard work.
