Hazard Tree Removal Update

August 31, 2022

The Western Hemlock Looper Moth outbreak and last year’s extreme heat have caused significant damage to a number of trees in the City. Main areas of impact include Mosquito Creek Park, Greenwood Park, Loutet Park, and some City boulevards. Some of these trees have died and now require removal as they pose a risk to the public due to potential falling or fire.

In September 2022, we’ll be removing dead conifer trees located in Mosquito Creek Park, as shown in the map below. Suitable replacement trees will be planted soon. This work will prioritize minimizing impacts to the native wildlife and trees will be retained wherever possible. We are also fertilizing damaged trees in Greenwood and Loutet Parks in an effort to support their health and help them survive. This does not pose a risk to the public, but please keep pets and children away from the treated areas.

The City is committed to the protection and expansion of the community’s urban forest. Since 2019, we have planted approximately 4,000 trees on public property, with hundreds more added each year. Learn more at cnv.org/StreetTrees.
