About Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event held on April 22, to show support for protection of the environment.

The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. On that day, 20 million Americans – at the time, 10% of the country's population – demonstrated in massive coast-to-coast rallies for a healthy, sustainable environment. By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the U.S. Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. Twenty years later in 1990, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage.

The first Earth Day started a movement of people whose common goal is keeping our planet healthy. Earth Day now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org, including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.
