Get Involved by Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for residents to get involved, provide input on important issues and make a positive contribution to our community. The City is currently accepting applications to fill vacancies on the following Committees. All committee applicants must be City residents.

The City is seeking applications from North Vancouver City residents and the business community for the following Committees.


Advisory Design Panel

Attention Architects & Landscape Architects:  If you are applying to these categories applications must go through your accrediting association. Registered Architects should submit applications to AIBC Volunteer Opportunities and Landscape Architects should email landspace@telus.net.  Applications will be reviewed by the accrediting association and recommendations will be made to the City of North Vancouver for consideration.

Purpose: To make recommendations to Council on applications for renovations, additions or new construction for all development (except one-family and two-family residential developments) based on the relationship of the building(s) to one another, to the site and to other properties in the immediate vicinity. Other considerations for review include the mass and scale of the building(s), design consistency, landscape architecture, impact on neighbouring properties, type and quality of exterior finishing and crime prevention through environmental design.  The Advisory Design Panel also provides Council with recommendations on sign applications and major development proposals on public streets, parks and other public properties.


Advisory Planning Commission

Purpose: To advise Council on the community planning aspects of the following:

  • Official Community Plan (OCP), including amendments, federal, provincial or neighbouring municipal development plans which may affect our OCP; 
  • City Plans or strategies such as transportation plans, economic development situations, or strategic plans which offset the City's OCP; 
  • Zoning Bylaws, Development Permits and Development Variance Permits; and
  • Other items directed by Council. 

Board of Variance

Purpose: To adjudicate appeals for minor variance to the Zoning Bylaw and rule on applications as set out in the Local Government Act. 

Heritage Advisory Commission

Purpose: The Commission advises Council on matters related to the City’s Heritage Program including:
  • Public education and awareness
  • Listing of heritage resources on heritage inventory
  • Incentives to encourage conservation of heritage inventory
  • Regulations to protect heritage inventory
  • Monitor resources on the inventory
Applicants must be City residents or owners of property listed in the City of North Vancouver Heritage Inventory. Meetings are held once a month as required.

Integrated Transportation Committee

Purpose: Advises Council and City staff on transportation policy, planning and mobility issues within the City of North Vancouver. Focus will be on active transportation (walking and cycling), transit and the integration of all modes of transportation (walking, cycling, transit, goods movements, and general purpose vehicles).


North Shore Advisory Committee on Disabilities Issues (ACDI)

Purpose: Advises the Mayors, Councils and staff of the three North Shore municipalities on a wide range of issues affecting people with disabilities. Prospective volunteer members must have a disability, be a resident of the City of North Vancouver, and be able to attend meetings on a monthly basis. North Vancouver City Library Board

Purpose: To manage, regulate and control the library service and carry out responsibilities associated with maintaining and supporting the existing library.


North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission

Purpose: Facilitates and encourages community resource involvement and recreation opportunities to encourage the development potentials of physical, social, emotional, spiritual and intellectual being.


Social Planning Advisory Committee

Purpose: To advise on broad social, cultural and ethnic concerns that affect residents of the City and recommend on matters concerning the planning and development of municipal strategies to meet community social needs.
