Community Energy & Emissions Plan

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a key sustainability initiative as envisioned in the City's Official Community Plan (OCP).

The City's updated Community Energy and Emissions Plan builds on its 100 Year Sustainability Vision for a zero carbon future and was adopted by Council in April 2010. It provides overall targets for community-wide greenhouse gas emission reductions associated with land use, buildings, transportation and waste.

The related Official Community Plan Amendment outlines associated targets, policies and actions for reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The OCP amendment was developed to meet the City's obligations under the Local Government (Green Communities) Statutes Amendment Act (Bill 27). The amendment includes an overall community-wide greenhouse gas emission reduction target along with supporting sector-based targets.

Community-wide Climate Action Targets

  • Reduce emissions by 15% below 2007 levels by 2020 and 50% by 2050
  • 100 Year Sustainability Vision is to achieve net zero emissions by 2107
