Public Internet Policy

In order to fulfill our mission of supporting popular materials, life-long learning and literacy and to act as a community resource centre, North Vancouver City Library provides access to a wide range of information resources, including those available on the Internet.
While the Internet offers access to a wealth of material that is enriching to individuals of all ages, it also enables use of some material that may be objectionable or disturbing to some users and/or illegal. In order to deal with some of the problems created, the Library has adopted the following policies and procedures:

• North Vancouver City Library endorses the Statement on Intellectual Freedom of the Canadian Library Association
• The Library complies with the Canadian Copyright Act, the Criminal Code of Canada, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and other legislation governing access to expressions of knowledge and intellectual activity
• Within these limitations, customers of all ages have free, unfiltered access to Internet computers in the Library’s Adult Department
• The Library recognizes that people have a right to use the Internet in privacy and uses the placement of equipment to provide privacy where possible and to protect others from viewing material they do not wish to see. Both staff and customers are asked to respect the privacy of others and not to interfere with their computer use
• The Library believes that parents and guardians are responsible for what their children read and view. Parents are encouraged to supervise their children’s Internet sessions at the Library. As an aid, the Library provides filtered Internet computers in the Children’s and Teen areas. These filters block much of the material on the Internet that may be considered inappropriate for children
• Relevant Library publications and documents (e.g. registration forms, handouts, computer signup sheets and orientation brochures) state that the Children’s and Teen computers are filtered and that the Adult stations are not. It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to monitor their children’s activity on the internet
• Prominent and legible signs containing the Library’s Public Computer Use Policy are posted near all the Library’s public use computers. The Policy is also found on the Library Website.
• The Library Internet Disclaimer appears on the home page of all public Internet computers. It is also found on the Library Website.
• The Policy will be reviewed by the Library Board annually
