Lower Lonsdale

Lower Lonsdale continues to be an exciting hub of activity as the City works to build a sustainable community for all those living and working in what will be one of Greater Vancouver's best neighbourhoods.

The City is working to meet residential and commercial demands in the area. Excavation work has begun on the development sites north of Esplanade. Design work for the site south of Esplanade is underway.

In response to feedback gathered from the recent East of Lonsdale Planning Study, the City has proposed a solution for the lands on the north side of the 100 block of East 1st Street, and a preferred street design option for the 100 and 200 blocks of East 1st and 2nd Streets. Council is presently reviewing the options.

In 1997, City Council approved a development plan for a portion of Lower Lonsdale known as the Lower Lonsdale Planning Study Area (LLPSA). The LLPSA development plan addressed site assembly, building heights, site planning, open spaces, pedestrian linkages, traffic and amenities, as well as enhanced streetscapes, view corridors, and attractive skylines. These considerations are now a significant component of the City of North Vancouver's Official Community Plan, and have shaped the recent developments in the area.

Lower Lonsdale is set to feature an exciting new inventory of residential and commercial developments, as well as shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. Amenities such as the new John Braithwaite Community Centre, the City's first multi-purpose facility offering more than 35,000 sq. ft. or social, recreation and general community use space, and public open space such as Jack Loucks Court, are making Lower Lonsdale one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods in the Greater Vancouver area in which to live and work.

While developments have thus far been concentrated in sites located in the central and western portions, the City is now in the process of determining how to proceed with other new developments following the East of Lonsdale Planning Study. The former Versatile Shipyards and Esplanade Avenue between Lonsdale and St Georges are currently under construction and will include new utilities, amenities and access to the Pier Development. This will bring additional social and economic benefits to the area, and build a sustainable community for current and future residents.
