Each of us has a role and responsibility when it comes to climate action. As a member of our residential, business or youth community, you can join us in making simple changes to the way we live within the natural environment. Collectively, we can make a difference in the global fight against climate change.
The City of North Vancouver has made significant progress since joining the federal Partners for Climate Protection program in 1997. At approximately five tonnes per person, our municipality's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are among the lowest in Canada.
We aim to do better.
2005 marked an important point in the City's commitment to sustainability. We became the first municipality in Metro Vancouver, only the second municipality in BC and one of the first municipalities in Canada to adopt a Local Action Plan for GHG reduction.
As part of the Local Action Plan, the City established two targets:
- Corporate Goal: To achieve a decrease of 20% below the 1995 baseline by the year 2010.
- Community Goal: To achieve a decrease of 6% per capita below the predicted 2010 forecast.
We can do more.
In support of these goals, the City is taking action by implementing the following initiatives at the corporate and community levels. We wish to adjust our development practices so that in 100 years, we will achieve zero impact on the environment and eliminate the production of GHG emissions.
