Mahon Park Rehabilitation Project |
The Mahon Park Rehabilitation Project was initiated in 2001 to address the deterioration of the natural areas of Mahon Park. The 26 hectares of remnant forest suffered from stream bank erosion, invasive plants and the effects of intensive recreational use.
The Mahon Park Rehabilitation Plan was developed to ensure the safe enjoyment of trails and natural areas while protecting and enhancing the integrity of the environment. The plan was developed through a series of public workshops and open houses from May 2002 to June 2003. The project was endorsed by park users who highly value the natural areas of the park and the fish and wildlife that reside there.
Work completed to date includes:
- Trail improvements and trail relocation
- Invasive plant removal and replacement with native plantings
- Creek rehabilitation through bank stabilization and riparian plantings
- Staircase replacement
The Mahon Park Stewards
Created in partnership with the City of North Vancouver, Evergreen and the Environment Canada Action Fund, the Mahon Park Stewards are an awarding winning volunteer group that are essential in the protection and sustainability of our park natural areas. As a result of their hard work, invasive plants have been pulled, native plants have taken their place, a demonstration garden has been designed and installed with interpretive signage.
The work continues. Every month the stewards meet to pull invasive plants and foster native plant gardens.
Volunteer Opportunities
The Mahon Park Stewards are currently looking for interested volunteers to help with ongoing stewardship opportunities in Mahon Park. They meet on the second Thursday of every month from April to September, and on the fourth Saturday of every month but December. Stewardship is a satisfying and rewarding way to experience the natural areas in the City and contribute in a meaningful way to the ecological health of these areas.
The next meeting is July 24 from 9am to noon. Upcoming meetings will take place on August 28 and September 25.
"...by becoming a steward of Mahon Park I've had a chance to physically participate in invasive plant removal while getting exercise and fresh air. Mahon Park is a treasure in the heart of the city that we should all cherish and care for." - Vic Balon, Mahon Park Steward
